16 Jul Former Governors Applaud Passage of Education Reform with Bipartisan Senate Vote in Children, Education and Workforce

Washington, D.C.– The members of the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) Governors’ Council, former governors Mike Beebe (D-AR), Jim Douglas (R-VT), Christine Gregoire (D-WA), Linda Lingle (R-HI) and Sonny Perdue (R-GA), issued the following statement after the passage of the Senate education reform bill by a vote of 81-17 this afternoon:
“We congratulate Senate HELP Committee Chairman Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Ranking Member Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) for successfully steering their legislation, S. 1177, the Every Child Achieves Act, through the Senate. The legislation’s final vote of 81-17 is validation of the hard work and bipartisan spirit that they put into the bill.
“We also would like to thank Sens. Dean Heller (R-NV) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) for their amendment, which passed by voice vote, to provide the governor and chief state school officer with joint sign-off on the state education plan. Governors oversee their states’ pre-k programs, university and workforce systems. In order to create a seamless system from pre-K through employment, governors need some oversight of the elementary and secondary education system.”
